 \nAbout the Ukrainian Music Initiative\n\nUkrainian resistance to Russia
 ’s genocidal invasion has inspired the world. Ukrainian culture\, includ
 ing art\, literature\, design and music\, which for centuries has been sup
 pressed and threatened with elimination\, is a key element of the fight.\n
 \nUMI\, a new New York City-based effort\, was created to elevate Ukrainia
 n classical music to its rightful place in the Western canon and to fill a
  significant gap in the US’ cultural landscape. This is being accomplish
 ed by having skilled and knowledgeable musicians of Ukrainian heritage per
 form Ukrainian music in accessible venues on a regular basis.\n\nA collabo
 ration of four independent artists\, UMI consists of contralto Vira Slywot
 zky\, cellist Valeriya Sholokhova\, and pianists Margarita Rovenskaya and 
 Pavlo Gintov. All of whom have a longstanding history of commitment to Ukr
 ainian music and are sought after performers in New York City and beyond. 
 Joining them in their mission are musicologist Leah Batstone and business 
 entrepreneur Alex Gamota.\n\nUMI is presented by Vira &amp\; Friends\, a n
 on-profit corporation under the auspices of the Ukrainian American Educati
