This October, New York audiences will have a rare opportunity to experience the work of pioneering Ukrainian filmmaker Oleksandr Dovzhenko on the big screen.
Beginning October 10, Metrograph presents Oleksandr Dovzhenko: Earth and Empire, a retrospective exploring the work and legacy of one of Ukraine’s most influential filmmakers.
The program includes screenings of Dovzhenko’s landmark films Earth, Arsenal, Zvenygora, Aerograd, Ivan, and Shchors, alongside works by filmmaker Yulia Solntseva. Several films will be presented on 35mm, with select screenings featuring live musical accompaniment.
The retrospective continues an important conversation around Dovzhenko’s work, Ukrainian cinema, and the need to understand Ukrainian cultural history beyond the frameworks through which it was often presented during the Soviet era.
Razom is proud to continue supporting opportunities for American audiences to discover and engage with Ukraine’s cinematic heritage.
